Network Devices

Posted on May 19, 2025June 3, 2025 by kotenkoo

A computer network is a digital telecommunications network that allows nodes to share resources.

Common Devices in a Network

  • Client – A device that accesses a service made available by a server.
  • Server – A device that provides functions or services for clients.
  • Switch – Aggregates connections and provides connectivity within the same LAN. It forwards traffic within a LAN, typically has 24 or more ports, and does not provide connectivity between LANs or over the Internet.
  • Router – Provides connectivity between LANs and sends data over the Internet. It usually has fewer network interfaces than switches.
  • Firewall – Monitors and controls network traffic based on configured rules. It can be placed inside or outside the network.

Types of Firewalls

  1. Network Hardware Firewall – A hardware device that filters traffic between networks.
  2. Host-Based Firewall – A software application that filters traffic entering and exiting a host.

Examples of Cisco Devices

  • Switches: Cisco Catalyst Switch 9200, 3650
  • Routers: ISR 1000, 900, 4000
  • Firewalls: ASA 5500-X, Firepower 2100
